RECONSTRUCTION OF THE PLOSKUMS–ZAICEVA STAGE OF THE P40 HIGHWAY

Reconstruction of the Ploskums-Zaiceva section (15.60–25.02 km) section of the P40 highway from Alūksne to Zaiceva, including that bridges over Sarkanīte and the Pededze, began in July 2012 and all works were completed by 31 August 2013.

The section of the road due to be reconstructed was a gravel road with a low load-bearing capacity, without adjoining ditches, and with an overgrown central reservation. During the course of the works, the aforementioned gravel was replaced, trees and bushes were removed, new ditches were dug, culverts were built and a new road structure and asphalt surface were built.

During the reconstruction of the road, renovation works were also carried out on three civil engineering structures: the bridge over Sarkanīte, the bridge over the Pededze and the River Akaviņa culvert. These works were carried out by specialists from the SIA 8 CBR Bridge Department. The carriageway of the bridge over the Pededze was renovated along with the bank reinforcement cones; spans were renovated, the riverbed was repaired and metal barriers were erected. In the case of the bridge over Sarkanīte, the shore supports and carriageway were renovated, the riverbed was repaired, and stone piles were built – water-restricting obstacles to stem the current. In turn, in the case of the Akaviņa culvert, its shields were rebuilt, the riverbed and final foot of the outlet were repaired.

The renovated section of highway was fitted with traffic organisation components including: road signs, safety barriers, signal posts and horizontal markings. In addition, expanded public transport stops were built.

For its implementation of this project, SIA 8 CBR received Autoceļu Avīze annual award 2014 Site of the Year.
